Upper Arlington Fire Fighters - Local 1521
International Association of Fire Fighters

The members of the Upper Arlington Fire Division are represented fraternally by the International Association of Fire Fighters, and are organized as a closed-shop collective bargaining unit.  The organization's primary goal in negotiations is fire fighter safety and health, family benefits, health-care benefits, and fair labor practice.  With 59 members, and one paying "fair share,"  negotiations take place every three years with the city to establish a contractually safe and fair workplace.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association - MDA

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). More than 245,000 members of the IAFF in the United States and Canada are pledged to saving lives, both as fire fighters and paramedics, and as the strongest campaigners for the worldwide research efforts of MDA to eradicate 40 neuromuscular diseases. The contributions of the fire fighters also go towards MDA’s summer camps for children, professional and public health education, and other programs.

As the greatest contributor to MDA, fire fighters are everywhere in the efforts of MDA to raise money. The IAFF is the biggest sponsor of MDA’s Labor Day Telethon and it contributed a record breaking $17 million in 2002  as a consequence of the overwhelming enthusiasm and contribution of tens and thousands of fire fighters and paramedics across the US and Canada. The IAFF raised this amount throughout the entire year through their passionate Fill the Boot campaigns, in which fire fighters greet motorists, shoppers and others and ask them to donate money to the MDA.

Sparky's House

The Upper Arlington Fire Fighters spent approximately seven years selling and hand-delivering thousands of bags of mulch to the driveways of residences in and around Upper Arlington.  Countless hours of fire fighters hauling hardwood and cypress mulch, thousands of dollars collected from residents who faithfully purchased each and every year.  All of the work came to a finale in 1999, when the Local purchased "Sparky's House," a 28-foot tow-behind camper designed specifically for use as a Fire Safety Education Trailer.  The mulch sale continues each year to raise funds for future projects.
